Vegetable ivory needle case. Vegetable ivory was used for small carved pieces in the mid nineteenth century. It is formed from the seeds of a dwarf South American palm tree. This needle case is intricately carved. A Victorian lady would have kept it in her sewing box. The screw top has some minor damage. There is a 2mm sliver out of the edge under the round knob and the very top small knob has several small chips. Measurements: Length – 3 ¼ inches (8 cm): Width – ¾ inches (2 cm).
