Royal Doulton Tobogganing Plate
This delightful earthenware plate is decorated with the Royal Doulton Series Ware pattern titled Tobogganing. It features a scene titled "Three boys on board a broken toboggan". The background is deep cream and it has a Greek key and stylised flowers border. The three little boys are well rugged up in warm clothes, scarves and caps. There are some fir trees and a cottage in the background. The series was introduced in 1908 and withdrawn by 1928. There is a Royal Doulton backstamp and printed pattern number D2656 (different to that listed in Louise Irvine's Series Ware book). In addition, there is an impressed number 4-09 indicating that it was manufactured in 1909 although this is too faint to photograph. The plate is lightly crazed commensurate with age and there is a tiny white spot on the brown edge of the rim. Otherwise it is in excellent condition with no damage and rings very well. This is a very bold and colourful illustration and is very collectable. Measurement: Diameter - 10 1/4 inches (26.5 cm).
