- Lynne Yorkshire
This two section Stanhope needle and pin case is carved in bone in an intricate pattern. The acorn shaped end unscrews to open a needle case and the centre part unscrews to reveal a compartment that would have contained pins. The top has a round finial holding a Stanhope lens with a clear sharp view titled Low Harrogate. Stanhopes are optical devices that allow microphotographs to be viewed. The concept was developed by Charles, 3rd Earl Stanhope in the 1700s and became commercial in 1857 when René Dagron invented a small inbuilt lens that could magnify the image by up to 300 times. His company continued their manufacture until 1972 although they were most popular during the early 1900s. It is in excellent condition with no damage. Measurements: Length - 3 3/4 inches (9 cm): Weight - 1/4 oz (8 gm).
