Midwinter Peggy Gibbons Georgie Porgie Nursery Ware Mug
This quaint earthenware mug is decorated with an illustration titled "When the boys come out to play". It features Georgie Porgie in a schoolyard about to run away when the other boys come out of school. The inside rim has a pale green border. There is the facsimile signature for Peggy Gibbons. There is a backstamp that reads Midwinter Porcelon (?), Burslem, England. It has the facsimile signature for Peggy Gibbons. After working for three years as assistant designer with Clarice Cliff, Peggy Gibbons joined Midwinter in 1940. She left after six months to become Designer for Royal Doulton and stayed with them for the rest of her working life. During her short time at Midwinter in 1940, she adapted her illustrations for china nursery ware. Wartime restrictions soon limited production although this was renewed after the war until the early 1960s. The mug is in excellent condition with no damage and rings true when tapped.
