Shibayama Ivory Page Turner
This Shibayama item is a page turner. Shibayama was developed during the Meiji era (1868-1912). The Emperor of Japan decided to Westernize the country, and artists turned to making items for the export trade. Typically, these had inlays and apliques of mother-of-pearl insects and birds, in this case on ivory. The art form extended to many other items including boxes, card cases and trays and particularly whist counters. This page turner is in good condition with no damage.
