Aynsley Child's alphabet plate. An extraordinary pattern that demonstrates sign language for the deaf. The plate has an outer border of the alphabet in relief. Then in the well of the plate is a border with the hand signs for all letters of the alphabet and two words Good and Bad, The inner pattern has two cats, one wearing a top hat and tails and the other wearing a country yokel outfit. They seem to be dancing. On the back in burgundy is stamped a registration number over Aynsley and Co., Longton indicating manufacture between approximately 1875 and 1891. The registration number is partly obliterated but suggests it was introduced in or after 1886. Other then the normal age discoloration, the plate is in good condition. It has a small patch of discoloured crazing on the back and a couple of rough scratches on the front that can be felt with a finger nail but which cannot be seen. Measurements: Diameter – 5 ¼ inches (13 cm).
