WMF Child and Snail Art Nouveau Card Tray
This charming WMF Art Nouveau card tray has a reposse design of a young child kneeling down and watching a snail moving along a leafy tendril. This tendril borders the tray and swirls around to form two handles at each end of the tray. This item is illustrated in Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork - WMF 1906 which is based on a reproduction of the WMF catalogue for 1906 and produced by the Antique Collectors Club. It is listed as number 210 on page 173 where it is described as a Visiting Card Tray and page 300 where it is described as a Toilet Table Tray. It has a ring at the back from which it could be hung and it has four small bun feet. There is the impressed number 210. Two WMF marks are photographed but they are too small to clearly make out. It is in excellent condition. The firm WMF - Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik - was established in Esslingen, Germany in 1880. WMF became strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau style between 1900 and 1914. Measurements: Width handle to handle - 10 3/4 inches (27.5 cm): Height - 5 1/2 inches (13.5 cm): Weight - 8 oz (230 gm).
