Silver Plated Candle Snuffer and Tray
The snuffer has a maker's mark W R with a crown in between and a further stamp that reads Patent Lever Without Springs. Both the snuffer and the tray have an identical mark that looks like a starburst. An attempt to photograph this is shown. Extensive investigation has failed to reveal the maker's name but authorities have provided an opinion that this is a William IV patent and that the date should be in the 1834-1837 region as this was getting towards the final years of such pieces being used. In 1840, candles were introduced with wicks that burnt down without trimming being required. If any viewer has knowledge of the maker we would appreciate this information. They are in excellent condition with no damage.
