Shelley Lustre Butterfly Small Bowl
This delightful earthenware bowl is decorated with a lustre glaze which is blue-green on the inside. The outside has two different colours. The lower half of the bowl is deep blue lustre and the top half and the rim can best be described as a pale olive green marble effect with pale brown streaks. The rim is edged with gilt. The inside base of the bowl is decorated with a butterfly. It has a cream and gold body with green and purple cream and gilt wings. The bowl has the Shelley backstamp and also has Walter Slater's signature on the base. Walter Slater was the Art Director at Shelley from 1905 to 1938 having worked at Doulton for the preceding 20 years under the direction of his uncle John Slater. He was particularly well-known for developing lustre and Intarsio wares. The bowl is in excellent condition with no damage and rings very well.
