Royal Doulton Dickens Bill Sykes in Relief Jug
This Royal Doulton earthenware jug is decorated with one of Charles Dickens’ characters, Bill Sykes together with his dog. The name Bill Sykes is impressed just behind the dog. This series was modeled in low relief as described in Louise Irvine’s book Number 1 on page 26. There is also a photo of the jug in her book Number 5 on page 20. The series was introduced in 1937 and withdrawn soon after during World War II. The jug has the Royal Doulton backstamp and printed beneath this is Reg’d. in Australia. It has the date number 11 indicating manufacture in 1938 and the pattern number D5833. It is in excellent condition with no damage and rings very well. Measurements: Height – 5 inches (12.5 cm): Diameter base – 3 ¾ inches (9 cm).
